Tasty.

I’ve just discovered this agency called Praline, and they’ve done some beautiful stuff, mainly in publishing. Check out some of my favourite publications below. Praline Richard RogersRichard Rogers PralineRichard Rogers + Architects: From The House To The City by Fiell Publishing

Admittedly, when I was Googling “praline”, I wasn’t looking for a design agency…I was obviously looking for some indulgent recipes. Then I got distracted by Praline’s amazing body of work and soon found that my cravings for sweet things had vanished. Weird. Maybe that’s going to be the next big dieting fad – the design diet? Although if that worked, surely I’d be skinny as a rake by now!

Polaroids by Bastian Kalous

Bastian K A Light SeductionBastian K’s ethereal analogue photographs put all your Instagram pictures and Photoshop wizardry to shame! They have such an otherworldly quality to them, and look as though they could almost be found photographs, or developed from old negatives.Where They Say GoodnightBastian Kalous PhotographyBastian K CarouselMisty MorningMore photographs are on Bastian K’s ever-expanding Flickr account, too.

David Bowie – The Next Day

ImageAnother amazing new video from David Bowie! Once again, he’s teamed up with Floria Sigismondi – the same director who did the video for ‘The Stars (Are Out Tonight)’ – and this time Bowie plays a prophet. Gary Oldman co-stars as a priest and Marion Cotillard is the leading lady, portraying a prostitute who develops stigmata. The cinematography and styling in this video is brilliant – so many frames make amazing images in their own right.Gary Oldman The Next DayEyeball platterDemonic NunLove this demonic nun look – definitely doing something similar for Halloween this year!Gary Oldman and Marion CotillardBleeding handsMarion CotillardCardinalStigmataGary Oldman The Next DayWhen I first saw it, I thought it was a bit of a shame that people are so jaded these days that it probably wouldn’t be recognised as being particularly scandalous. But then I read some headlines about how it had already pissed off some Catholics and I took comfort in the fact that of course religious zealots and Daily Mail readers are still so easy to shock! To experience it in its full glory you should probably watch it on Vimeo – then you don’t have to see an annoying logo and can watch it on a full screen. Enjoy!

Here On In – Rachel Zeffira

Rachel Zeffira – one half of Faris Badwan’s side project, Cat’s Eyes – has teamed up with musicians from S.C.U.M. and TOY to create this contemplative solo offering. Lovely stuff.

Gloam

‘Gloam’ is a beautiful new short film made by We Are The Forest (comprised of David Elwell & Gareth Hughes). It portrays the journey of a solitary creature making his way through the forest, and is both mysterious and melancholy. Even though the protagonist strikes me as somewhat creepy and bizarre, its character seems gentle and intriguing enough that you have a kind of empathy for him – it’s never revealed what’s in the forest, but I found myself hoping that this strange beast wouldn’t come to any harm. The moving soundtrack seems to evoke a kind of loneliness, and it’s like the creature is searching for something meaningful.

Little People – Aldgate Patterns

The video for ‘Aldgate Patterns’ by Little People is both beautiful and strange. The visuals fit the music so well, and the whole thing is enchanting. I really like the mixture of the rural landscape with the futuristic digital projections – you’d expect it to have a weird discordance, but somehow it just works.

Directed by Adam Amaral, the video was made in collaboration with production studio WORK and animator Chris Martz. Amazingly, the post-production work and special effects used were minimal – most of what you see in the video has been created through projection mapping.

Encounter by Calvin Klein

Alexander Skarsgård + Lara Stone x Calvin Klein = Fuck Yeah.

These beautiful specimens both star in an atmospheric campaign video for the new Calvin Klein men’s fragrance, ‘Encounter’. The advert was directed by Fabien Baron.
