Tragic / Beautiful

Mandy Barker‘s wonderfully poignant series of photographs, entitled SOUP, might initially look like awe-inspiring Hubble Telescope images, but the back story to these pictures is deeply saddening. The compositions and subject matter remind me of the work of Tony Cragg, but while Cragg’s plastic collages reflected political unrest, Barker’s photography has an environmentalist message behind it – all of the plastic oddities featured in her pictures were found in the sea. This problem is so severe in the North Pacific that an area exists there that’s called the Garbage Patch
